Transportation staff told the budget committee that the Athena routing plan reduces required buses to 24 morning and 24 afternoon routes and cuts daily bus mileage from approximately 2,800 miles to 1,800 miles. Mr. Kee said drivers will test routes with monitors to document changes and that most routes aim to keep student ride times at or below the district's 90-minute goal.
Officials noted the district installed new camera systems on all buses and a tracking system that records location, speeds, stops and route history. Committee members praised the anticipated efficiency gains while acknowledging the complexity of routing across a geographically large county.
