Committee declines plan to hire full-time substitutes after cost review

Angie Schubert, who oversees substitute placement, told the committee that as the district's "sub finder" she does not have difficulty finding enough substitutes on a day-to-day basis and that on any given day there are at least five substitutes in the district. Committee members reviewed cost estimates included in the minutes: substitute pay after 10 days is $150 per day; hiring at a beginning-pay rate would cost roughly $242 per day plus an estimated additional $20,000 annually for insurance, raising district personnel costs without reliably solving coverage needs in lunchrooms and playgrounds.
Given the reported daily substitute pool and the higher salary and benefits costs associated with full-time hires, the committee chose not to bring the full-time substitute proposal forward to the board.
