Knoxville Police to keep visible presence in school zones; city speed-camera rollout still under construction

Assistant Chief David Powell said the Knoxville Police Department will maintain a visible presence in school zones during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal, particularly through the first two full weeks of school, to deter reckless driving and keep students safe.
"Slow down, stay alert, and be patient in school zones," Powell told the press, noting officers will also remind drivers to be cautious around school buses and stops. He added that drivers should expect increased enforcement as officers work to deter careless or reckless driving around campuses.
Powell said the city's planned red-light and speed-camera rollout in school zones is still undergoing construction and will not begin immediately at the start of the school year; the department intends to issue a press release when the cameras go active.
