Secretary Joel Jundt told the Commission during his Secretary’s Report that limited legislative days before Sept. 30, 2026 mean the highway program faces funding uncertainty. He said the House passed a continuing resolution on July 20 to fund the federal government at FY2026 levels through Dec. 4, 2026 and that "it is likely that an extension of Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) will be the vehicle needed to be passed to maintain the highway program."
Jundt noted that the constrained congressional schedule reduces the time for a reauthorization debate and that SDDOT is monitoring federal appropriations closely as they affect state and local projects. He asked the Commission to be aware of funding risks that could affect letting schedules and project timelines.
