Local business owner asks DuBois to regulate vacant downtown storefronts

Sarah Vanderpool, a local real-estate title company owner, told the council she plans to relocate her business downtown and urged the city to adopt an ordinance addressing maintenance of vacant commercial properties. She proposed basic standards such as keeping storefront windows clean, removing outdated signage and debris, and maintaining exterior conditions.

"If the city can fine a homeowner for not cutting their grass, then I believe commercial business owners should be held to the same type of standard," Vanderpool said, asking that any ordinance be enforced consistently and not used punitively but to encourage responsible ownership.

Vanderpool said downtown events organized by DDI are valuable, but a cleaner, well-maintained downtown would better support those efforts and encourage new businesses. She urged the council to review existing codes or draft new standards to strengthen downtown revitalization efforts.

Council members did not adopt an ordinance at the meeting but indicated the request would be reviewed. Vanderpool asked the council to consider enforcement and to ensure maintenance requirements focus on improving appearance while being fair to property owners.
