The Town Board unanimously adopted Local Law No. 3 of 2026 on March 25, replacing Local Law No. 2 of 2011 and aligning Town procedures with New York State Agriculture and Markets Law (Article 7). The law requires licensing for dogs four months and older, assignment of a permanent identification number and tag, and recordkeeping by the Town Clerk. The motion to adopt passed with all five members voting aye.
The law defines mandatory and permissive seizure authorities, sets redemption and impoundment procedures in compliance with state statute, and preserves that destruction or forfeiture may occur only as permitted by State law and court order. The Dog Control Officer (DCO) will enforce the provisions and maintain seizure and disposition records for at least three years as required by State law.
