Sheriff Ryan Swope reported the department handled 499 complaints in January, with counts listed by locality: 100 in the City of Grayling; 232 in Grayling Township; 35 in Frederic; 42 in Beaver Creek; 26 in Maple Forest; 35 in South Branch; 20 in Lovells; and 9 outside Crawford County. He said corrections numbers are up and that a new applicant (from the state of Mexico) is undergoing background and medical clearance and would need Michigan certification before hire.
Swope said last weekend saw increased snowmobile patrols in coordination with state partners and Lake State Railroad, and he noted an opioid meeting scheduled for the following day. He also reported the DNR allocated $25,000 for deadfall and tree cleanup on the bike path, and that approximately 300 trees are tagged from North Down River Road to the high school and need attention.
