Kevin Macamera, the district’s technology lead, told the board that the district’s Category 1 E-rate application had been approved and that federal support will cover about 70% of the district’s internet and data-transport costs. He described the leased 21-mile fiber connection from Moonstone as the district’s largest recurring cost and said Runestone applies for the reimbursement to simplify district billing.
Macamera said Category 2 — which would fund a new firewall — is currently in review and that the proposed firewall purchase would be roughly $15,000 and expected to provide multi-year licensing and advanced security features. He stressed that securing the network is a priority to reduce downtime and protect student data.
The district has also expanded security cameras across the three buildings and moved to key-card door access at North and South to reduce liability and improve response. Macamera said the county dispatch already has access to the district camera feeds and that the district is coordinating building maps and potential integration with CRG (a crisis response mapping tool) to support first responders.
The board asked a series of integration questions about visitor mapping and camera access; Macamera said he is working with vendors and law-enforcement partners to finalize technical and privacy details.
No formal procurement decisions were made at this meeting beyond reporting progress and vendor coordination.
