Village reviews zoning change to regulate internet-based car dealers

Village Administrator Podgorski introduced Robinson Engineering/Village Planner Maura Rigoni, who asked the Committee of the Whole to review a Planning & Zoning Commission recommendation to amend Lansing Zoning Ordinance Section 56-289(n) (standards for automobile sales and rentals). Rigoni told trustees the village has received applications from "non-traditional automobile sales" businesses that operate primarily online or by appointment and therefore may not need a showroom or display lot.
Rigoni said these businesses would still require special-use approval under the proposed amendment and requested the board’s feedback. "This will be placed on February 17, 2026, Village Board Meeting Agenda," the minutes record. The change is intended to align zoning standards with sales models that do not rely on on-site display lots while preserving the special-use review process.
If the board places the amendment on the Feb. 17 agenda as planned, the item will return for formal consideration and any required public hearing. The Planning & Zoning Commission recommendation and the ordinance language will be available to trustees and the public before that meeting.
