Fredonia elementary reading program posts multi-year gains, principal says

Marjorie, principal at Fredonia Central School District's elementary school, told the board that reading is the district's top instructional priority and that recent changes are producing measurable gains. "This year 62 percent of our kids at the end of the year benchmark assessment are reading at or above grade level," she said, noting that the median Fredonia student achieved 133 percent of expected annual reading growth compared with similar students nationwide.
Marjorie and classroom teachers credited a coordinated literacy system that pairs UFLI Foundations phonics instruction in early grades with H and H Intermediate core materials, weekly progress monitoring and five annual data meetings. Presenters described Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions (small-group pullouts three times per week or daily 30-minute sessions) and said i-Ready diagnostics and weekly progress checks guide decisions to change instruction when students stall or decline. The district plans to continue expanding UFLI and to strengthen targeted supports based on data.
