Council approves automatic-read water meters; questions raised about battery replacement and long-term ownership

The City Council adopted Ordinance No. 188 on May 5, 2025, updating Chapter 52 to require replacement of water meters with automatic-read devices by Jan. 1, 2027. Public Works Director Arnold said the city has a contract with Ferguson to assist with meter replacement and that an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system will enable automatic leak detection.
Council Member Oachs said she "has a hard time supporting the transition without knowing who will be responsible for replacing the battery in 10 years." City Administrator McCann said responsibility for longer-term maintenance, including battery replacement and potential city ownership of meters, could be addressed during the budget process.
