At the June 17 meeting the Shandaken Zoning Board of Appeals voted to grant four variances requested by Cellco Partnership, DBA Verizon Wireless, for a 50‑foot class‑2 wooden utility pole and antenna at 8 Firehouse Road (Big Indian Fire Department).
The board conducted a roll‑call vote after public comment and counsel responses; each member present recorded a 'yes' and the chair announced the motion as granted. Olivia read the roll call with the listed board members recording affirmative votes during the roll call.
The variances approved included a use variance (to permit the wireless facility in the district) and three area variances related to pole siting and other dimensional requirements. The board discussed whether to vote on each variance separately and ultimately voted on the four requested variances together.
Board counsel and staff noted receipt of a county 'no impact' response for the project prior to the vote. The approval allows Verizon to move forward with local approvals and coordinate any further state or county permits required for construction.
