CAC members report mixed recycling at Kingston facility, urge source reduction

Members of the Conservation Advisory Council reviewed findings from a Kingston recycling tour and reported that the facility accepts and stockpiles compressed recyclables until market volumes allow sales. Committee member (S2), who attended the tour, summarized the practical acceptance rule used by the facility: "Bottles, jars, jugs, and tubs." She said the center relies on that simple guidance while staff hand-sort contaminants out of the stream.
Speakers described large piles of mixed materials and local employees removing nonrecyclables. Committee member (S2) warned that some material that cannot be sold is shipped to a landfill near Seneca Falls and said Ulster County must plan alternatives before that landfill reaches capacity. Members recommended pursuing source-reduction policies, outreach to businesses and restaurants, and coordination with county environmental staff so towns can reduce contamination at the origin.
