Summary
After a public hearing, the Town of Shandaken adopted Local Law No. 1 of 2026 creating a film-permitting process with fees up to $5,000 for major productions and discretionary waivers for local nonprofits; the board said police and traffic-control fees will remain separate and clearly noted on the application.

The Town of Shandaken on July 14 adopted Local Law No. 1 of 2026, establishing a film-permitting process and fee schedule for productions that use town streets or facilities. Town officials said the law sets a sliding fee structure that can reach as high as $5,000 for major productions while allowing the town to waive fees for local nonprofit or documentary projects.
At a public hearing before the vote, Conservation Advisory Council chair Beth Waterman asked whether town emergency-management costs for traffic and policing would be covered by the film fee; Supervisor Mansfield replied that the police already charge for on-scene services and that the application will list additional charges explicitly. "They have a fee structure for when people are doing filming up here," Mansfield said, adding that the permit will require applicants to state where and when filming will occur. The board moved to adopt the local law during the resolutions section and approved it by voice vote.
