Board of Appeals grants variance for Hyattsville resident’s nonpermanent carport

The Prince George’s County Board of Appeals voted 3–0 Jan. 15 to grant variances that will allow Marlon F. Wise to install a nonpermanent galvanized-steel carport on the driveway at 7612 Allendale Circle in Hyattsville.

Wise, who identified himself to the board, told members he is a disabled veteran with a steep driveway and recent health problems, including a heart attack, that make backing his vehicle dangerous. He said the proposed carport would be anchored by four footings and would protect him from winter slipping when he must enter or exit his vehicle. "My driveway is steep... my doctors don't even want me doing it," Wise said in testimony to the board.

Board members examined photographs and the petitioner’s statement of justification in the meeting binder and questioned whether an existing carport would be removed; Wise said it would remain. Vice chair Johnston and other members said the lot’s topography and slope created practical difficulties that meet the county’s variance criteria. Vice chair Johnston moved to grant the variances; Member Stanton seconded and the motion passed by roll call vote 3–0.

Administrator Watson told Wise the board will issue a written decision and that a building permit will still be required before any construction. "You'll receive a written decision from the board," staff said, and staff will follow up with next steps for permitting.
