Curriculum director: New Buffalo students post high M-STEP and PSAT proficiency across grades

Sam Stine, the district’s curriculum director, presented assessment results to the New Buffalo Area Schools Board of Education, saying the district posted unusually strong M-STEP and PSAT outcomes across multiple grades. He reported that third through seventh grade ELA proficiency rates ranged from 66.1% to 93.8% and that the district’s overall ELA proficiency is 79.9%, compared with the state average of 40.7%.
“These results show that the district’s curriculum, materials, and Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports are effectively meeting student needs,” Stine told the board. He also said eighth-grade PSAT Reading and Writing proficiency was 97.9%, while high school PSAT proficiency rates ranged from 65.7% to 77.6%.
Stine described district practices that feed the results: teachers meet regularly for brief “Data Digs” to monitor student progress, plan interventions, and align coursework to students’ Educational Development Plans. He said those routines, combined with curriculum materials and targeted Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports, explain much of the performance gains.
