Resident tells Grand County recycling program 'lots' of materials went to landfill

A Granby resident urged the Grand County Board of County Commissioners on March 11 to overhaul the county's recycling operations, saying local plants were not sorting or processing materials and much of what residents thought was recycled "ended up in the landfill." Daniella, who gave her address as 505 E. Bruce Drive, said she initially helped reopen the Granby recycling operation but found operational problems and poor oversight.
"Lots of the items were not recycled. They ended up in the landfill," Daniella told commissioners, and she left documents with the board so staff could review what follows the material after collection. She argued the county and towns currently have no mechanism to see how outsourced facilities process local recyclables and urged stronger local sorting and transparency so material does not become waste.
The board did not take immediate action during the public comment period but commissioners discussed ongoing work and upcoming conversations with town and recycling partners. The comment will be part of staff follow-up on regional recycling options and possible upgrades to sorting and local processing.
