Grand County Library District reports $7.1M year-end balance, advances Kremmling library planning

Tara Thompson, acting executive director and director of finance for the Grand County Library District, reported the district’s 2024 audited figures and 2025 priorities to the Board of County Commissioners. Thompson said the district ended 2024 with “just over $7,100,000 in fund balance” and noted the organization collected roughly $5.7 million in revenue last year. Thompson said the district intentionally carried reserves toward a planned new Kremling library and related capital needs.
Chris Newell, director of public services, summarized operations and programming: the district serves about 10,500 borrowers and signed up 2,094 new cardholders in 2024. He said physical circulation has declined while digital usage (e‑books, audio, streaming) has grown and the library is shifting collection budgets accordingly. The district reported about 1,500 on-site programs and roughly 15,000 program attendees across the system in 2024.
On facilities, Thompson said the Kremmling project plan estimated the new facility at roughly $6–8 million and the board has designated $4.5 million in reserves toward the purchase; the district has approximately $7 million in funds now and is evaluating timing and possible debt versus cash purchase strategies. Commissioners praised the library’s outreach and programming and asked staff to keep the board apprised of property negotiations and the facility master plan.
