Grand County gets AA‑ rating; commissioners review $2.8M EMS land purchase and capital list

Grand County commissioners heard a finance briefing that included an S&P bond rating and a detailed review of the county's capital and fixed assets. Kathy Henderson, from accounting, told the board the county's largest purchase last year was land for a new EMS Granby station for $2,800,000 and listed other capital transactions including four sheriff vehicles totaling about $255,000, leased motor graders and a loader with $202,000 in annual lease payments, and airport improvement projects.
Commissioner Curtis highlighted the S&P rating, saying the county received an AA‑ (double A minus) and explaining that a higher rating typically produces lower borrowing costs. "We have an AA minus," Curtis said, adding that the rating will influence interest rates for the county's upcoming certificate‑of‑participation borrowing. The board subsequently approved the week's vouchers—outlined by Curtis at about $484,000, including a $203,000 payment to the housing authority—by voice vote.
The update also noted proceeds from sales of 13 surplus vehicles (about $106,000) and ongoing asphalt and airport projects. Commissioners asked staff to follow up on accounting classification for asphalt work and to continue providing the supporting capital documentation.
