Barker to open 15:1 multi‑age elementary special class for grades 3–5

The district will start a 15:1 multi‑age elementary special class for grades 3–5 next year, combining in‑district and returning out‑of‑district students with a hybrid instruction model and a resource room; the Board will create and fill a position in August.
Dr. Reimer relayed a report from Ms. Duerr that Barker will begin a 15:1 multi‑age elementary special class for grades 3–5 in the coming school year. The class will serve a mix of in‑district and returning out‑of‑district students with similar academic and management needs. Students will receive specialized instruction in the classroom and also participate in general education with consultant teacher support; a resource room will also be part of the continuum of services.
The program was developed collaboratively with families and staff to ensure capacity and fit. Dr. Reimer said the Board will need to create a position for the classroom in August and appoint a person to fill it. He described the program as one that "will really tie the programs the students need with the resources."
