DPW Director Paul Goodwin led Select Board members on a site walk May 5 through the Brigadoon neighborhood at Fuller Meadow School to show repeated sidewalk heaving attributed to street trees, a public-safety concern. Board members discussed balancing residents who want to keep all trees against those who want trees removed to preserve sidewalks; member Kosta Prentakis recommended identifying the problematic trees and notifying homeowners in advance.
The group agreed that removed trees would be replaced (unless a homeowner declines) with a new tree chosen from a town-approved list of three species, and that DPW would provide an overhead map identifying trees proposed for removal at an upcoming meeting. Goodwin told the board that severely damaged sidewalk sections will be replaced this season where feasible and that a total sidewalk overhaul is planned for the next building season.
