School board drops calendar amendment after state waiver allows pre‑Labor Day opening

A staff member (Speaker S4) told the board that after reviewing post‑July 1 legislative updates and Department of Education guidance, the division found a standing waiver that allows Bedford County Public Schools to open before Labor Day. "So it turns out because we do have that waiver in place, we don't have to amend our school calendar at all," the staff member said, explaining that the earlier reading of the Code of Virginia made a waiver appear limited to year‑round divisions.
The Chair (Speaker S1) called the voice vote after a second was offered, and the board approved removing item 4.01 from the agenda. No roll‑call tally was recorded in the transcript. The board proceeded with the meeting, including staff reports and a safety presentation.
The board did not take further action to modify the calendar; the staff recommendation was to retain the calendar previously approved by the board.
