Board hears plan to expand Seal of Civic Readiness and community-service expectations

Mrs. Monaco presented the Seal of Civic Readiness program and explained the four competency areas students must demonstrate—civic knowledge, civic skills, civic mindset and civic experiences—and how those align with Barker’s Portrait of a Graduate and service-learning goals.
Principal Dr. Love noted several students who exceeded the 20‑hour minimum, including Sara Meza Ray (178 hours) and eight others with 50+ hours, and said the district may consider requiring at least five service hours each year in grades 9–12 beginning next year. Mrs. Monaco and Dr. Love emphasized that high-quality service learning goes beyond simply logging hours and supports students’ civic competencies.
The Board will review Code of Conduct and related procedures in July, and the civic-readiness work will be incorporated into ongoing curriculum and capstone discussions.
