The commission heard a summary of Freedom Festival operations and costs.
City staff and the deputy city clerk, Kathea Jimenez, said the June 30 event at the high school drew a large crowd with 43 vendors. "The Jitters is the band that... did the entertainment, and that was paid for through, I think, an LTAC grant," staff said. Columbia Rural Electric Association sponsored the fireworks, which launched a little after 9 p.m. despite windy conditions that nearly prevented ignition.
Staff thanked public works, the firefighter association and volunteers for helping set up the stage and manage logistics. Commissioners praised the event and noted historical underspending of Freedom Festival funds that roll back into the lodging-tax fund for future use.
