Canaan BOE certifies compliance with Connecticut Nutrition Standards for 2026–27, allows limited exceptions
Summary
Pursuant to C.G.S. Section 10-215f, the board certified that food sold to students will comply with Connecticut Nutrition Standards July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027, and approved limited exceptions for event sales after the school day under specified conditions.
On March 10, 2026 the Canaan Board of Education unanimously certified compliance with Connecticut Nutrition Standards for the period July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027 pursuant to C.G.S. Section 10-215f. The certification covers all food offered for sale to students separately from reimbursable meals, including school stores, vending machines, culinary programs, and fundraising activities unless exempted by statute.
The board also approved a narrowly drawn exception that permits the sale to students of food items that do not meet the Connecticut Nutrition Standards only when three conditions are met: (1) the sale is in connection with an event occurring after the end of the regular school day or on the weekend; (2) the sale is at the location of the event; and (3) the items are not sold from a vending machine or school store. The minutes give examples (soccer games, school plays) and define "regular school day" for the exception.
