Charles Town to pass credit-card merchant fees to customers under new software

Lori said the city is changing software used for payments and intends to pass credit-card merchant fees to customers rather than absorb them centrally, which she estimated would lower a bank-fee line by about $50,000. "We're changing our software... and part of that change is that we're passing on the credit card merchants fees to the customer instead of paying them on our own," she said.
Council members asked staff to quantify what percentage would be passed to payers and to present the consumer cost impact at the regular meeting; Lori agreed to research and provide the percentage and examples before the vote.
