A Charlestown resident and her son asked the Parks board for permission to install a small memorial plaque honoring longtime coach Glenn Edwards near the pavilion at Jefferson Memorial Park. Karen Gruborg introduced the request and said the plaque and a modest concrete base would be privately funded; she asked for help from maintenance on installation and proposed a summer dedication timed with the parks' youth tennis programming.
Commissioners and staff discussed placement (on the grass near the pavilion rather than the concrete), whether maintenance could assist with installation and whether the board might waive pavilion fees for a small dedication. Staff said maintenance could help prepare the site, and the board moved to authorize staff to negotiate the details of installation and coordination with the proposers. "We have come up with an idea ... that we wanted to dedicate a memorial for Coach Edwards at the Jefferson Memorial Park where his pavilion lies on the corner," the proposer said during remarks.
The board approved a motion that authorizes staff to coordinate with the proposers on installation logistics and to bring back any required details for publicity and scheduling of a dedication event.
