OLRT committee backs Vail Ditch water‑share purchase, funds wildfire and trail projects

Anna Drexler, administrator for the Open Lands, Rivers & Trails (OLRT) program, presented the advisory committee’s spring 2025 grant cycle recommendations. The committee unanimously recommended fully funding a Grand County request to acquire 58.5 shares in the Vail Ditch (a $409,500 request), which would be used for split‑season conservation and to preserve agricultural water on the Granby Mesa.
"The recommendation from the advisory committee is to fully fund the grant request," Drexler said. County staff and the county manager emphasized that the county intends to hold the shares and lease them for continued agricultural use while pursuing conservation plans to benefit the Fraser River.
The board also heard detailed recommendations on wildfire mitigation and trail grants: a Fraser River Canyon fuels project ($200,000 request) scored highly and received a unanimous recommendation for full funding; several other trail and wildfire prevention requests were approved with conditions and some abstentions due to conflicts of interest. Commissioners debated partial funding for Town of Fraser bike‑park connector trails and ultimately approved a specific allocation of $61,360 for connector trails while accepting the committee’s remaining recommendations.
Advisory members noted scoring, match requirements and that projects scoring below 60 were not recommended; applicants can reapply with improved scope or match information in future cycles.
