Benicia Herald archive (1899–1971) now live; library to seek permissions for more years

The Benicia Library announced Sept. 9 that the Benicia Herald archive covering 1899–1971 is now accessible online. The library plans a press release in the coming week after staff verified the archive's functionality and content.

Staff said they are scanning more recent copies but can only make additional issues public if the owner grants permission; in the short term the library will add a year at a time as material enters the public domain. "We are still actively scanning the more recent copies even though we won't be able to put them up on the newspaper archive unless the owner decides to give us permission," a staff member said. The library also noted the owner previously signaled support for making local content available somewhere locally, and staff will continue to pursue options such as grant funding to host additional material locally.
