Vice‑Mayor Evan Hellenga presented the City Commission with year‑end statistics from the local humane shelter, reporting that in December the shelter recorded 147 intakes, 71 adoptions, 24 animals returned to owners, 56 transferred out to other organizations, 18 euthanizations and one death in the shelter. Hellenga told commissioners the shelter’s live release rate for the month was 89% and that 794 animals were transferred out during the year.
Commissioners acknowledged the figures and thanked staff and volunteers. Commissioner Ron Matheson specifically thanked the Police Department for its role in recent community events; Hellenga also presented Mayor Terry Carter with a Mayor’s Award recognizing his leadership and service in 2025. The report was delivered as part of the consent/reports portion of the Dec. 22 meeting; commissioners took no separate formal action on the shelter report during open session.
