The Community Services Commission on March 17 presented a proclamation, on behalf of Mayor Wendy Bucknam, declaring March 2026 to be National Nutrition Month in Mission Viejo.
Dr. Sangeetha Srivastava, who identified herself as immediate past president of the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, addressed the commission. "My name is doctor Sangeetha Srivastava, and I am current immediate past president of California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics," she said, and described the role registered dietitians play in translating nutrition science into individualized guidance. Srivastava encouraged residents to make "right food choices" and said dietitians can help manage disease and improve public health.
The proclamation text cites the month’s theme, "discover the power of nutrition," and notes nutrition’s links to maternal and child health, immune function and chronic disease prevention. Srivastava told commissioners the Academy has multilingual materials and statewide proclamations and offered to email those resources to city staff for local distribution. "We will provide city... I will email and attach all those resources," she said.
The proclamation was read during the meeting’s presentation portion and the commission accepted the recognition. The commission also read a related proclamation naming March 11 as Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day, noting the education and credentialing required for the profession.
