Hampton poll: residents prioritize public safety pay adjustments, EMS staffing and tax questions

Robin McCormick presented the results of the city's annual budget-input polling, which had roughly 1,600 participants across in-person and online outreach. "Coming out on top is the public safety pay range adjustments," McCormick said, summarizing the highest-ranked priorities; she also noted strong support for EMS staffing increases and some targeted civilian pay adjustments.
McCormick said the online poll had 981 participants and that the respondents were closer to a 50-50 gender split than usual. Respondents left more than 300 written comments with recurring themes: concerns about high taxes and requests to prioritize police, education and trash collection, alongside calls for continued investment in parks, code enforcement and youth employment. Staff said the manager's recommended budget will reflect survey input while balancing council priorities and operational constraints.
