Longmont mayor directs staff to prepare three ballot options for public safety tax

Mayor Hanako Fering moved to direct staff to bring back three ordinance versions of a proposed public safety tax for council to consider on the ballot next week. The options she described were a 50% property / 50% sales split, a 60% sales / 40% property split, and a 70% sales / 30% property split.
"I move to direct staff to bring back 3 options for the public safety tax ballot measure," Mayor Hanako Fering said when she introduced the motion. Council member Marcin seconded. The motion passed unanimously; staff will prepare written ordinance language and the council will consider formal adoption next week.
Council later also approved a separate motion directing staff to draft a resolution expressing the council's support for the public safety tax ballot measure. That supporting-motion vote was recorded 6-1, with Council member Christ opposed.
City staff said tonight's actions were intended to give voters options about the mix of revenue coming from sales tax versus property tax and to ensure ordinances and ballot language meet procedural deadlines. Chief Financial Officer Teresa Malloy provided preliminary spreadsheets later in the meeting showing how each split would affect sales- and property-tax rates and said staff will include commercial-property impact estimates requested by council.
Next steps: staff will draft the three ordinance versions and return them in next week's packet for council consideration before any ballot title is set.
