The Ione City Council on Aug. 4 appointed Linda Smiley to fill a vacant council seat through Dec. 31, 2026, after interviewing three candidates in open session. Vice Mayor Rhodes moved to appoint Smiley and the motion received a second and council approval.
Smiley, a former city clerk and a previous elected council member, told the council she has decades of local experience and said she wants to help the city "keep Ione as it is" while finding ways to grow revenue. In her remarks she said, "I just love this town." Council members thanked all applicants for stepping forward and welcomed Smiley; the mayor congratulated her and said she will begin participation at the next regular meeting.
