South Weber City Council approved a resolution appointing Murphy and Murphy Law to provide public-defender services after staff explained the city's prior public defender had moved to another office. Lisa (city staff) said the city solicited referrals and that the firm in question was the only one that expressed interest for the current opening.
"Ask the judge for referrals and also our outgoing...If you have any recommendations, we'd contact the post to see who was interested. This is the only one that was interested," Lisa said when council sought context about the hiring process. Council moved and seconded the appointment and approved it by roll call.
Council members asked whether the county or city led hiring and Lisa clarified the referral process and recruitment steps. No member asked to delay the appointment; staff said the city would proceed with contract finalization and bring necessary documents back to the council.
