Rexburg council advances FY2026 budget amendments after hearing; no public opposition

CFO Matt Nielsen summarized proposed adjustments to the city’s fiscal 2026 budget, saying the amendments reduce the previously adopted total by roughly $6.7 million as several large projects were deferred.
“We’ve actually reduced it with these amendments by about 6,700,000,” Matt Nielsen said, and listed major items contributing to the reduction, including postponement of an ice rink project and the transition of the fire department to a fire district. Nielsen told the council that many projects simply did not proceed during the year and were pushed to the next fiscal year.
Mayor opened the public hearing for the amendment, invited testimony for, neutral, and against positions and recorded no speakers. With no public testimony, the council moved and seconded a motion to pass Ordinance 13-56 and consider it for first reading. The motion carried on a voice vote. The council and staff noted the adjustments are based on current estimates and that some line items will be refined as year-end accounting completes.
