Selectboard approves $141K Flint Road rehab and $10,500 hammer attachment

The Williamstown Selectboard voted on June 8 to proceed with a 1.8-mile rehabilitation of Flint Road that will include underdrain installation, ditching, culverts, crushed granite resurfacing and plant-mix material. Chair Larry Hebert and Town Manager Ryan Lockwood presented an itemized estimate and funding plan.
"The total project cost is estimated to be $140,942.00," Lockwood told the board. The town plans to use approximately $96,000 currently in the road reserve plus an anticipated fiscal-year infill of $150,000, leaving funds available for other projects after Flint Road is completed. The scope would stop at Moore Road and is intended as a preliminary test for techniques to be used elsewhere.
The board also approved buying a hydraulic hammer attachment to speed ledge removal and avoid costly contractor shutdowns. "The quote received for the attachment was $10,500.00 from United Ag," Hebert said; proponents argued ownership would save on repeated rental or contractor mobilization costs estimated at nearly $3,000 per stoppage. Selectboard member Cote Griggs voiced concern about underuse of equipment but supported the motion to approve both the project and the equipment purchase.
The project will include traffic control and detours during resurfacing; the manager noted potential additional expense for extra dump trucks during the resurfacing phase and will report final procurement and scheduling details back to the board.
