AWS, with Constellation partner, outlines preliminary plan for possible Calverton data center campus

Amazon Web Services representatives described a potential data center campus adjacent to an existing Constellation Energy facility in Calverton and emphasized the project is still under evaluation, with no county agreements finalized.

"There are no existing agreements in place between Amazon and Calvert County," Becky Ford, who identified herself as representing Amazon AWS's economic development team, told attendees during an evening presentation at Calverton Middle School. Ford said the company has preliminary site plans and is engaging with the county and residents through an online portal and an in-person open house.

Ford said the company submitted a site plan in September 2025 as part of wetland-permitting due diligence that currently shows eight buildings, but she cautioned that the layout could change during further design work. She also noted the site is already zoned heavy industrial, meaning no rezoning would be required to support a data center use.

Why it matters: the plan could bring operations staff, construction activity, and new tax revenues to the county, but it also raises local questions about environmental permitting, water use, grid impacts and traffic. Ford directed attendees to an open-house area across the hall and said a Maryland Tech Council landing page would post answers to hundreds of portal questions the following day.

Ford closed by reiterating the project's early status: no agreements have been signed and the company is continuing due diligence and public engagement before any formal submittals to the county.
