Garland Cares program to help residents with lawn care, minor repairs and tool loans, staff says

City staff described an expanded assistance program called "Garland Cares" that will combine prior volunteer efforts and city partners to provide tool loans, lawn and small home repairs, and volunteer help for residents in need.
"It's now Garland Care, which encompasses our efforts," Brian Morris said while outlining how the program brings together Volunteer Garland, Co Cares and community development partners. Morris said residents can request assistance through a portal and can request the type of help they need; staff emphasized the program will not handle medical or financial records and will focus on minor maintenance and repairs.
Morris listed examples of services to be provided: tool loans (lawnmowers, weed eaters), minor fence repair, shrub/tree trimming, paint and similar activities. The city will also attempt to pause enforcement while assistance applications are vetted so that residents actively seeking help are not immediately pushed into enforcement hearings.
Staff asked committee members to help spread the word and said they would share links and coordinator contact information (Volunteer Garland coordinator Jose Diaz) with the committee.
