The county coroner reported annual and monthly caseloads and outlined recent expenses during the board meeting. "February slowed down a bit from June: 28 deaths, 11 male, 17 female," the coroner said, and presented the annual tally: "281 deaths in Vernon County in '25, 263 or 94 percent of those were coroner cases." The coroner also reported 169 cremations and 106 burials for the calendar year.
The coroner itemized February expenditures and explained a legacy billing gap for the MDI Log documentation service, saying the county must pay roughly two years' fees that were previously omitted from IT or coroner budgets. "There is an explanation there... it never got paid through IT, and it never got paid through the coroner's office," the coroner said. The coroner also described case classifications used by the office and noted the most common causes (natural causes, accidents, suicides, undetermined) and the lab workload.
Board members asked clarifying questions about case categories and whether certain deaths (for example, fall-related hip fractures) are counted as accidents. The coroner explained routine processes for autopsy billing and for sharing documentation with outside services. The report concluded with thanks to staff and an acknowledgement of training and documentation needs.
Next steps: the coroner will continue routine reporting to the board and follow up on any billing or documentation process changes.
