Benicia library reports nearly 29,000 summer visits; student-card effort yields thousands of new cards

Jennifer Baker, Benicia’s city librarian, presented the library’s summer activity to the commission and said staff served 28,978 patrons between June 9 and Aug. 10. "28,978 people came through our doors, between, June 9 and August 10," Baker said, and she described robust summer-reading programming for children, teens and adults, a second annual 'library sleepover' and outreach including prize drawings for adult participants.
Baker also outlined the student-success library-card initiative, which converts student lunch numbers into library-card numbers; she said the program produced 4,398 new library cards for Benicia Unified School District students last week. Commissioners asked about food support and partnerships; Baker summarized collaborations with Food Is Free and volunteers that helped provide weekly groceries to families during the summer months.
