Sheriff: Newbury patrol hours more than doubled year over year as county expands services

Caledonia County Sheriff Brandon Thrailkill told the Newbury Selectboard on June 24 that the Caledonia County Sheriff’s Department (CCSD) has been expanding its range of contracted and community services for area towns. He said the department provides road-construction coverage, wide-load escorts, court security, occasional Bear Ridge Speedway coverage, graduation coverage, bike safety education, civil fingerprinting, and dispatching support.
“Newbury received 27.5 hours of patrol from January 1 – June 1 in 2025 and 65.5 hours of patrol during those same months in 2026,” Sheriff Thrailkill said, and he said CCSD is on pace to fulfill contracted patrols for the year. He told the board his eventual goal is to expand services with another full-time deputy and to gradually add evening patrol hours, and he expressed willingness to tailor services to town needs.
Board members asked about staffing and coordination; Thrailkill said his department has been fortunate in recruiting staff and fostering communication with towns. There was no formal vote on patrol levels at the meeting; the report was presented as an informational update to inform future contracting decisions.
