Sheffield board delays automatic 3% utility rate increase set for June

The Village of Sheffield Board voted unanimously on May 12 to abate the annual automatic 3% increase for water, sewer and surcharge rates that would have taken effect with the June 2026 billing. The motion to abate was made by Trustee Corwin and seconded by Trustee Taylor; roll call showed AYES: Adams, Corwin, DeVoss, Price and Taylor; ABSENT: Barry.
Trustee Taylor raised concerns about the timing of a rate increase given the current economy and residents' ability to absorb higher utility costs, prompting the board to delay the automatic adjustment and wait until the 2027 scheduled increase to reassess. The board framed the ordinance as a tool to keep up with inflation between larger rate adjustments, but agreed the present timing was not ideal.
The abatement is procedural: no alternative rate was adopted at the meeting. The board will retain the existing rates for the June billing and revisit the automatic increase during next year's cycle or earlier if circumstances change.
