Residents press for better enforcement of tenant protections; council agrees to agendize discussion

She said she contacted the city's code enforcement intake but received unclear guidance about enforcement of the Tenant Protection Act, which she noted went into effect Jan. 1, 2020: "I wanted to know who enforces tenant protection act," she told the council and said she will submit a written summary to the clerk.
Her remarks prompted Council member Morgan to request that staff bring forward a discussion of city enforcement of tenant protections. Council voted to agendize the topic (motion carried 6–0, one absent), directing staff to prepare materials for a future meeting so council can consider whether local enforcement practices or resources should change.
The agendized discussion will allow staff to outline existing code‑enforcement processes, identify whether local ordinances or staffing changes are needed to enforce state tenant protections, and recommend next steps for council direction.
