The Village of Lazy Lake on Oct. 24, 2024 appointed Council Member Ray Nyhuis to serve as mayor until the March 2026 election after Mayor Carlton Kirby announced his resignation effective Sept. 30, 2024. The council voted unanimously to make the appointment.
The council also filled two council vacancies created by recent resignations. Dana Merrill was appointed to the seat vacated by Mark DiPaolo, and Amold Aliff was appointed to the seat vacated when Nyhuis became mayor. The minutes record that each appointment was made “after deliberation and a unanimous vote” and that the appointments run until the March 2026 election.
The administrator said the vacancies were posted on the village website and emailed to registered residents; responses to that notice included Merrill, Aliff and Elizabeth Abrahams. The council’s action followed a discussion of the applicants and a roll call confirming a quorum was present at 6:31 p.m.
The minutes cite the Village Charter’s succession provision, noting it provides that the president of the village council shall act for the mayor in the mayor’s absence. The council did not record numerical tallies for the appointment votes in the minutes, only that the votes were unanimous.
