Council directs staff to explore foreclosure on abatement liens for three properties

Mayor Johann Wallace told the council the Town has repeatedly spent money remediating hazardous conditions on certain properties and asked whether foreclosure on abatement liens could reimburse the Town. Town Attorney Thomas Benavidez explained the foreclosure process is complicated, could incur additional costs, and that some properties may not be worth foreclosing on; he noted the Town has spent about $16,000 on remediation at 217 Pima Street over the years.
Council voted to direct staff to explore possible foreclosure actions on the abatement liens for 217 Pima Street, 303 Apache Street and 103 Tomahawk to determine whether foreclosure would be warranted and cost-effective. The motion to direct staff passed unanimously; staff will return with legal options and cost estimates.
