Huachuca City council backs more aggressive code enforcement, cautions about legal costs

Town Manager Suzanne Harvey reported that residents at a recent CDBG meeting urged stronger enforcement of the Town’s zoning, health and safety codes to protect property values and neighborhood appearance. Harvey confirmed staff and the Police Department are prepared to pursue active enforcement but warned council that some property owners may resist and enforcement could lead to court proceedings and associated costs.
"We are prepared to be aggressive, but she wants Council to be cognizant that some people may fight us on it and it may end up in court, so it may end up costing us some money," Manager Suzanne Harvey said, and Council members agreed that they wanted active, equal application of the law going forward. The Council gave direction to implement more active enforcement and to pursue remedies within the Town’s code; staff will return with specifics on enforcement steps and potential budget implications.
