Town Attorney Thomas Benavidez briefed the Council on the 2026 election timeline and filing rules. He said three council seats (incumbents Butterworth, Trate and Thompson) plus the mayoral office (incumbent Wallace) are on the Nov. 3, 2026 general-election ballot; he noted the town does not hold a primary for these offices and that voter registration closes at midnight on Oct. 5, 2026. Benavidez cited Arizona statutes in the briefing (ARS §16-120; ARS §16-134; ARS §16-542(C)).
Benavidez also explained that an incumbent whose term does not expire this year must resign before running for one of the available offices; incumbents with expiring terms may run without resigning. Mayor Wallace asked that advertising about the races begin now. The Council did not take a separate vote on this briefing; it was an informational presentation with legal guidance.
