Bridge Street residents complain of fly infestation tied to neighbor's chickens

Duane and Karla Messier, Bridge Street residents, told the Fairfield Selectboard on July 27 that odors and an "so many flies" problem at their neighbor's property have prevented them from using their swimming pool and porch. They said they reported the issue to the Town Clerk and the Health Officer inspected the property before the meeting.
Paula Boomhower, the property owner named in the complaint, told the board that the meat birds (50) were processed a week late and "it took them longer than necessary to clean up after," which she said contributed to the smell and flies; she also told the board traps had been installed and that the birds were otherwise clean. The Health Officer's visit, as reported to the board, noted minimal smell or fly presence at the time of inspection. The Selectboard directed follow-up by the Health Officer and board staff to monitor remediation and any ongoing public-health concerns.
