The committee reported progress on redwood guidelines and on producing a map to indicate areas more appropriate for redwood planting. Committee members said the goal is not to create a binary planting rule but to give homeowners and staff better guidance on where redwoods are likely to thrive based on existing maps of vegetation, streams and alluvial soils.
The subcommittee intends to refine the previously revised (but not adopted) 2021 guidelines and work with staff to produce useful, non-prescriptive guidance. The effort includes mapping places where redwoods historically succeed and advising when redwoods are unsuitable because of exposure or dry hilltop conditions.
